Pirelli Cables has supplied a variety of cables as part of a family’s project to turn a run down Victorian stone water tower in the picturesque Cheshire village of Lymm into a family home.
The ambitious renovation of Lymm Water Tower was undertaken by the Harris family, who purchased the 130-year-old, grade II listed property back in 1997 with the idea of creating a family home and, at the same time, making a unique contribution to their community by restoring a local landmark to its former glory (albeit for a different purpose entirely!).
The family worked over the next five years to bring the project to fruition and the project finally got under way in June 2002. Pirelli Cables came on board as a supplier in April 2003 and supplied the armoured cable and wiring required for the complete electrical system. The all white minimalist interior is being brought to life with over 350 luminares all discretely housed within the fabric of the building: it is the lighting scheme that brings the building alive. In total some 13,000 metres of cable of one sort and another have gone into the building.
The original function of the tower was as a header tank enabling local water supply. However, it ceased to operate around 30 years ago and its only current use was as a platform for mobile phone aerials, which were pretty unsightly but actually earn much needed revenue for the tower project, consequently they have been incorporated into the new design. The architects working on the project, Cheshire-based Ellis Williams, worked on a simple but stylish design, where the new works in tandem with the old. The design provides for day-to-day family living entirely at ground level, with the upper levels of the tower being used for the bedroom accommodation.
Commenting on Pirelli’s involvement in the project, Marketing Manager Jonathan Sloam said: “We’re delighted to be in a position to help out with such a committed and ambitious project. We pride ourselves on our high quality products. Pirelli was chosen to supply all the wiring cable this for high profile project.”
Russell Harris, the owner of the water tower and project manager on the refurbishment, added: "The Lymm Water Tower is a landmark building project from many points of view. We are obsessed with getting the detail absolutely right and as such we are only working with the very best in their field. I had no hesitation in specifying Pirelli cables for the project."
There has been a great deal of media attention around the project. The project's progress is being chronicled in a 15-part TV series produced by Little Planet Pictures for UKStyle. The series is due to air later in 2003. Find out more about the project on www.lymmwatertower.com
