Project in more depth:

The Background:
Since its launch in 1994 into the UK T.K. Maxx has prided itself on its unique customer shopping experience. With stores averaging approximately 30,000 square feet in size, it was important not just to ensure energy cost savings but also to ensure excellent uniformity across the exceptionally large floor area. A typical store layout includes a double height entrance hall leading through to the main ground floor sales area with a mezzanine above.

The Challenge:
This presented a further challenge to the lighting design scheme since the fittings had to be both easy to install and maintain particularly at times of lamp replacement. As any retail manager is aware, longer opening hours, means that disruption to trading operations must be kept to a minimum therefore speed and reliability are essential.

The Lighting Solution:
In order to accommodate the 6 metres high ceiling bespoke luminaires incorporating a high efficiency wide spread mirror were suspended in a linear arrangement using 3 High Output 80 W TL5 lamps per unit. This provided a 20% reduction in the quantity of lamps installed. Significantly, however, although the lamp is 40% smaller than standard T8 lamps, its superior performance means more lumens per watt therefore light levels were kept to 1000 lux.

Indeed, not only that but the lamps were also reduced to just 4 standard types which impacts positively on the number of stock variations required for maintenance and lamp replacement. In addition, by selecting T5 lamps, energy consumption is 22 % less than that of T8 and T12 systems operating on conventional control gear and, when used with High Frequency lighting controls, can achieve even greater savings. This is particularly relevant across an expansive floor area of a single store and of course can be further multiplied across the entire estate.

On the ground floor under the mezzanine, Philips Impala luminaires (pictured) using 3 x 54 W TL5 lamps were installed. Visual similarity with the fittings used on the sales area above and main atrium was important to create a more unified appearance.

As Marc Nicol, Store Development Procurement Manager for T.K. Maxx sums up, ”We wanted an energy efficient alternative to the previous concept but not at the expense of light levels. Not only have we gained energy savings but we now need less light points than before so we are more than pleased with the results.”
