Nexans cable helped ensure that this year’s Wimbledon tennis Championships could take place in the midst of a major construction project.

More than 5,000m of Nexans’ ALSECURE NXS prewired conduit cable was used during the legendary tournament to power a huge array of facilities, including lighting, kitchens, hospitality areas, commentary boxes and scoreboards.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club has just completed the first phase of a three-year project (scheduled for completion in 2009) to make substantial improvements to Centre Court.  These will include a new translucent, retractable roof, improved public catering facilities and an increase in capacity from 13,800 to 15,000 all new wider and more comfortable seats.

“We were looking for an armoured cable that was easy to install, and Nexans’ NXS was ideal,” says Geoff Williams of Pace Services, the electrical contractors on the project.

“Any cable we needed was available on a next-day basis, which is really useful when you are working on a fast-moving building project like this one.”

Croydon-based wholesaler Rexel Senate supplied the cable to Pace, who are working for the project’s principal contractor, Galliford Try.

Fail-safe circuit
ALSECURE NXS cable is ideal for partitioned walls and voids, and will operate 32A Type B MCB circuit breakers if penetrated by a sharp object, providing the ability for an electrical circuit to fail safe. ALSECURE NXS cable provides its own containment, so there is no need for expensive conduit or SWA cable.

It is suitable for installation both indoors and outside, in cable trays and baskets, in roof spaces and ductwork, directly on brick, stone, metal and other materials, behind plaster and as part of modular wiring systems. It is halogen-free and flame retardant, with minimal smoke emission, and is designed to protect people and property from the emission of toxic gases and deadly fumes in the event of a fire.
