The problem of sub-standard cables is still with us. RECI advises contractors to purchase cable from wholesalers who are members of the Quality Charter and to satisfy themselves that the cable is properly marked.

A detailed article about marking on cables appeared in the January 2008 issue of the RECI Newsletter. Dr Jeremy Hodge, Chief Executive of BASEC (British Approvals Service for Cables) visited RECI recently for further discussions on the problem.

BASEC provides product certification services to the Irish cable manufacturers and to overseas manufacturers manufacturing to Irish and European standards. BASEC are happy to offer assistance to Irish electrical contractors and wholesalers regarding the problem of sub-standard cables. Contractors should contact RECI in the first instance and we will advise BASEC.
