When Voltimum journalist, Frankie Snobel, decided to trade in her laptop for some bricks, sweat and hard labour, Philips offered its support along with some generous donations.

"Frankie's Building Volunteer Adventure" took place in a little village in Honduras called Chiligatoro and its neighbouring town, La Esperanza.  The building projects in these communities are designed to give families who are living in overcrowded homes more space and improved conditions.

In association with volunteer/holiday organisers i-to-i and community aid organisation IHFNA (Honduran Agency for Children and Families), Frankie was given the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

The money raised for Frankie's project went towards building Casa Marcos, a simple adobe brick home for a beautiful family of ten.  During Frankie's volunteer period, she and the other volunteers were needed to smooth layers of mud plaster onto the exterior and interior walls of the newly constructed house, protecting them from environmental damage.

The funds raised for this project supplied Familia Marcos with building materials, including corrugated tin roofing, cement powder, toilet bowls, a sander, saw, and tools galore.  Supplies were also purchased for the local charity daycare centre, including first aid kits, toilet paper, wipes, books, new shoes for all the children and sweets for a piñata party.  Funds were also used to mail over photographs of the community, including a framed family portrait for Familia Marcos to display in their new home.

Along with a generous financial donation, Philips supplied wind-up torches to the community.

"A big and warm thank you goes out to all of the kind donations and amazing support given to me along this exciting journey," said Frankie. "I was able to really help a community in need - from assisting in the construction of a home to handing out essential items that we often take for granted, it seems even scrawny arms can make a big difference."
