The Hermitage Amsterdam, like its famous counterpart in St Petersburg, has a special section dedicated to teaching children about art and culture. In this Hermitage for Children there are classes,workshops, exhibitions and other activities to stimulate development and nurture talent.
  In 2009 the Hermitage Amsterdam relocated to a stylish 17th century building on the banks of the River Amstel. Renovation work included a new lighting plan for the rooms where children’s workshops take place, which have large windows on both sides. The lighting solution had to brighten the middle of the room, cater for different occasions and conditions, while also matching the wooden ceilings it was integrated into. “In the summer a lot of light streams in from outside, whereas in the winter it can be pretty dark even during the day,” says Hans Wolff of Hans Wolff & Partners Lighting Designers, who were responsible for the lighting throughout the building. “We incorporated two different Master TL5 fluorescent tubes in each luminaire, one which produced a warmer light with a color temperature of 2700°K and the other giving off more bluish light at 6500°K. The intensity of both can be altered to suit the ambient lighting levels, and also for specific occasions like video presentations.” The appearance of the lighting was also important. “Standard louvered fittings for fluorescent lamps are often uninspiring,” says Wolff. “We wanted something more appealing that would match the workshop room interiors, so we chose Philips Savio luminaires. Instead of louvers at the bottom they have a plastic surface that diffuses the light very evenly.” The Savio luminaires fit in beautifully with the surroundings, while the dynamic lighting solution inside offers the ideal balance between functional light and ambience creation. Children can work and learn in a well-lit environment which is also pleasant and contributes to their - and their teachers’ - general feeling of well-being. The lamps themselves offer several other advantages. “Fluorescent are still the most energy-efficient option available,” says Wolff. “They are also cheap to replace and easy to maintain.” Ease of use was also another key criterion. Adjusting the lighting levels and colour is carried out using a Philips remote control. Staff can do this without problem; no training or specific lighting knowledge is required.
