Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This Question of the Month, concerning the heights of wall switches, is answered by ETCI:
Question: Why are the heights of wall switches for lights, lower than before. Is this not more dangerous as children can now operate them?
Answer: The Department of Environment has directed that lighting wall switches should not be higher than 1200mm or lower than 900mm. This is to allow easier access for people with special needs or disabilities.
It will of course be easier for children to operate them but if properly installed there should be no great danger. After all sockets and table lamps are frequently below this height.
