New ETCI Guide for Users of Electrical Equipment in the Medical Practice

14.06.2010
ETCI

ETCI Technical Committee TC10 is quite a broad church, its membership consisting of technical experts, clinicians, healthcare advisors, competent authority representatives, nursing representatives, and others.

As a way to enhance the role of the non-technical members, a sub-group was formed to provide a context wherein these members could make a contribution to TC10 in a meaningful way. The overall aim of this exercise was to increase awareness of standards-related knowledge concerning medical technology among nontechnical members who work in a healthcare setting, together with the role of technical standards and regulations as they apply to medical equipment.

As a first project, the sub-group decided to develop a guide booklet entitled: ‘Electricity in the medical workplace - An educational guide for users of electrical equipment in medical practice’.

The booklet discusses electricity as it affects the human body, explores electricity and its usage in the medical workplace setting, and looks at important aspects of electrical equipment in medical practice. Some tips and good practice guidelines are also included.

The booklet will be of interest to all nurses, allied health professionals, and clinicians who routinely use medical equipment in their work.
