US energy secretary visits Scotland and Ireland

25.01.2011

US energy secretary Dr. Steven Chu has visited sites in Scotland and Ireland, including the research labs of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and the facilities of Eirgrid, Ireland's electricity transmission systems operator:

Secretary Chu also hosted a clean energy 'town hall' with his Irish counterpart Eamon Ryan, minister for communications, energy and natural resources.

He gave a keynote address at the International Sustainable Energy Conference: International Perspectives to 2050, and participated in Dublin City University's Nobel lecture series. He also visited the Marine Institute of Ireland in Galway.

Scotland has set an 80% renewable energy target for 2020, and will have to integrate this generation into the grid while managing the variable nature of wind power. Strathclyde University is playing a major role in addressing those challenges by improving technologies and training scientists and engineers who will harness offshore wind and wave power resources.
