ABB presents intelligent app to control KNX building functions

Published: 10 June 2016 Category: News

ABB, a global leader in power and automation, will present the new intelligent KNX app at the Light+Building event in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The solution is introduced in Germany, Austria and Netherlands under the Busch-Jaeger brand – a member of the ABB Group.

ABB presents intelligent app to control KNX building functions

The Busch-ControlTouch® KNX IP gateway combines the KNX installation with the IP network (LAN) and controls all KNX functions in the building. The easy-to-use app – for iOS and Android – turns not only smartphones and tablets, but also soon the Apple Watch into practical remote controls for KNX systems.

In addition to controlling switches, dimmers, blinds and scenes, the Busch-ControlTouch® KNX also integrates IP cameras, Sonos wireless boxes and Philips Hue lights within the system. Local user support can assign roles with user rights. Additional product features include Scene Editor, RGB/RGBW support, week timer with practical astro function, optional presence recording and alarm notifications via push messages or E-mail. Busch-ControlTouch® KNX also enables the creation of individual logic scripts. The end customer can also activate remote control via ETS programming, without requiring a VPN tunnel.

ETS4 and ETS5 project data can be fully uploaded and/or imported and then be available in the myABB-LivingSpace online portal (my.abb-livingspace.com).
The compact device with its fireproof housing (72 x 90 x 60 mm) features a KNX connection, LAN connection and 5-36 V connection for an external Power Pack. It also features two buttons for restarts and two LEDs for status and connection display. Complete module start-up and modifications are made via the myABB-LivingSpace online portal.

Suitable for private housing, offices, large housing complexes or commercial properties – the Busch-ControlTouch® KNX takes modern, intelligent living and working to the next level. Simply take control of all smart devices in the KNX system. Using your smartphone on the move, tablet in the office or even your Apple Watch from the comfort of your sofa.

My points are:

Why has ABB come up with a Visu for Building Automation which utilises Smart devices?
In every home we do have a number of Smartphones, tablets or even an Apple smartwatch to enhance our daily life. We take pictures, we use it as our diary, as a Sat Nav or monitoring our health and fitness. Why not taking advantage of it to control your comfort in the house?

Would it not have been commercially more interesting to offer a solution including the hardware?
The use of Smartphones and tablets is something we are all used to, we don’t even think anymore how to operate these devices as they are so intuitive. This is what we are building our concept on.

What was important for ABB when developing a visualisation for KNX?

Two things had to be covered: 1. An easy way of commissioning the device, directly connected to the KNX bus but programmed via the web. We also wanted to make sure that we are also including an IP-Gateway to reduce the need and the cost of an extra Gateway. Last but not least we wanted to have built-in logic functions to give the Integrator more flexibility in achieving what his clients want.

And what was important for you when looking at the end user?
A: The intuitive operation was a clear number one. The layout and structure does not require any explanation, it is simply understood. Furthermore we took on board feedback so we included the control of Philips Hue to easily create mood lighting as well as a direct connection to Sonos Wire-less Speakers. The popular Multi-room Audio system can be easily controlled direct in our ControlTouch App or the customer can jump easily between the two Apps for the full functionality. Last but not least, more and more homes do have a CCTV system installed. This can be linked directly into our App so one can control the heating, lighting, etc. chose their favourite music and check the cameras around the house.
