Following the recent announcement that several of the company’s cable designs have been approved by London Underground, Draka today confirmed that its Saffire steel-wire-armoured range of power cables has also received London Underground’s full approval. It has been added to the list of the company’s cables satisfying – and in many cases, exceeding – the safety requirements of Section 12 (underground) areas, as set out in London Underground’s LU 1-085.
Significantly, Saffire, which is third-party approved by BASEC [British Approvals Service for Cables] is the only LU-approved BS 6724-compliant cable range. Since its launch in 2008 it has established a new and higher level of fire safety performance, enabling cable to be specified that provides enhanced safety in line with the latest fire safety legislation. It also greatly assists building control officers to easily identify that superior fire safety is being incorporated into a building.
Saffire is a zero halogen, low smoke OHLS cable that is particularly suitable for use in demanding applications such as hospitals, theatres and shopping precincts, as well as tunnels and public utilities, where the protection of life and the safeguarding of equipment and structures is an essential requirement.
The Draka cables earlier approved by London Underground include Firetuf FTP120 (until a recent rebranding of the Draka range, known as Firetuf Powerplus) and Firetuf FT Sifer (previously called Firetuf Sifer). Other Draka cables approved as meeting the standards set down in LU 1-085 include Firetuf FT120 (previously known as Firetufplus Enhanced) enhanced-category fire alarm cable, and Firetuf FT30 (until recently, Firetuf Easystrip) standard-category fire alarm cable.
