Pirelli’s New FLEXO cuts contractor time
Originally developed for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, FLEXO’s success has led to the system being used on other prestigious projects such as the Jubilee Line Extension and at the approach road leading to Heathrow’s Terminal 5 building.

Gordon McKinnon, marketing manager for Pirelli Cables said: “Modern rail tunnels are required to have ambient lighting so that passengers can walk to safety in the event of an emergency train evacuation. The lights must also remain illuminated in the event of a fire. The key benefit of the FLEXO system is to significantly reduce installation time. Six electricians can install 500 light fittings in a 6km rail tunnel in just a day, whereas the same tunnel could take a week using traditional methods.”

Graham Tyler, commercial director of R & M Construction Services Ltd which installed the system at Terminal 5 said, “Using Pirelli’s FLEXO made the installation process much easier than using a conventional hard wire system. Working to a critical timescale meant the pressure was on as the road had to be open and ready for traffic on a specific date. The whole system was pre-made by Pirelli and delivered complete on 16 cable drums. It was literally a case of just laying out the cable and plugging in the lights.”

FLEXO is delivered on a drum containing a cable harness, which is simply unwound along the tunnel wall. Once the harness has been supported on a tray, fixing the light fittings becomes a simple plug and socket arrangement – minimising the amount of site time consumed by installation, testing and commissioning.

FLEXO meets stringent fire performance criteria and offers low smoke and fume characteristics (LSOH). The system uses Pirelli’s FP 400 fire resistant cabling in tandem with its newly developed LSOH JEM (Joint Encapsulation Material). This has high standards of viscosity and electrical properties, whilst eliminating the hazards associated with the use of traditional polyurethane resins.
