Protect your electronic equipment!

Published: 5 January 2005 Category: News

Easily avoidable failures in electronic equipment are adding enormously to costs in almost every area of industry and commerce, according to enclosure expert, Sarel, a division of Schneider Electric. The root cause of the problem is lack of effective thermal management in enclosures, which means that equipment is subjected to unnecessary extremes of temperature.

Protect your electronic equipment!

"In the old days, when most of the equipment in enclosures was electrical, rather than electronic, designers could often get away with neglecting thermal management," said Sarel's Brian O'Donoghue, "but today, when electronic equipment dominates, the situation is very different. A temperature rise of just 10º will significantly reduce the life of almost any electronic system. And, it's not just high temperatures that are a problem – many systems just won't work reliably at temperatures below 0ºC."

O'Donoghue estimates that the cost of premature failures and down time resulting from poor thermal management runs into tens of millions of pounds every year, in the UK alone.
