Voltimum gets latest scoop at ETCI regional seminar on the National Rules for Electrical Installations, Fourth Edition

Voltimum was at the first regional seminar for the National Rules for Electrical Installation, which was held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Blanchardstown on 18th February. This was a seminar to discuss and highlight the main changes and differences between the third and fourth editions.

New electrical installations may be constructed to either the third or fourth editions up to 30th September 2009. The third edition will not be valid after that date. The ETCI has developed this seminar to familiarise the electrical industry with this fourth edition. The director of the course is  Jim Keogh, Chairman of ETCI Technical Committee 2 (TC2), who also presented.  He was accompanied on the podium by Tony O'Doherty and Brian Moran.

Jim Keogh started with an overview of the 4th edition and giving us a brief look at the major changes.  This included:

  • DC systems earthing
  • Protection against shock
  • Protection against fire and harmful thermal effects RCD's expanded requirements and particularly in regard to bathrooms Socket/switches wall mounting heights
  • Overcurrent Devices Isolation

He also highlighted new sections introduced for areas such as:

  • Fountains
  • Construction and Demolition Site
  • Medical Locations
  • Exhibitions, shows and stands
  • Caravans and motor caravans
  • Gangways
  • Temporary installations
  • Flooring and heating installations

Tony O'Doherty then gave an in depth look into the major changes in regard to wiring systems, switchgear & accs, overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection and isolation.

Brian Moran was up next and he discussed the important changes taking place with RCD's particularly in regard to special situations such as bathrooms, exhibition & stands, temporary installations and construction sites. He then spoke about verification and testing.

Jim Keogh gave the final session. He spoke about the changes in certification and the periodic inspection reports as well as the sub system certificate. He brought attendees through the changes and then through the process with on-screen examples.

Having spoken to several contractors afterwards, the consensus was that the seminar was a excellent and 'very useful'
