The Connecta system has recently been selected for the majority of major tunnel lighting projects in the UK.  Further afield Connecta is also gaining a growing and impressive reference list.  One such project is the Dublin Port Tunnel.Mercury Engineering chose Connecta because of its obvious installation advantages, but also because of its superb fire performance, ensuring lighting can continue to function when one section of the circuit is involved in a fire.

Mercury  employed a novel method of installation of the overhead lighting in the tunnel - a modified double-decker bus, which together with Connecta made the whole job considerably quicker and easier to install.

Overall a total of some 1400 Connecta units and associated Firetuf cabling were employed in the tunnel lighting system.

Fire Safety in road and rail tunnels is the subject of serious concerns at present following a number of fire incidents, particularly in European road tunnels.  In Europe,  minimum regulations for tunnel safety are being developed through an EC Directive.

Draka believe that fire rated modular cabling systems have a significant contribution to make to tunnel safety, particularly in the areas of smoke extraction and emergency lighting.

Connecta was exhibited at the recent Intertunnel 2006 event held in Torino, Italy, where considerable interest was generated.
